Schwerin

365 turrents, masters of fine arts and a castle as a stage

Obviously Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, had a weakness for water when he founded the town of Schwerin in 1160. About one third of the town area consists of lakes and another third of forest, parks and gardens. Here the political, cultural and historical heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern pulsates: Schwerin castle is not only a museum, but also the seat of the State Parliament. Schwerin castle is said to have 365 turrets and towers - one for every day of the year.

Old town

Just a few minutes away from the castle is the old part of the town of Schwerin with several hundred historic half-timbered houses, impressive churches and governmental buildings. In the old streets, visitors can walk between small boutiques and shops. Although the town is cosy and peaceful, everything in Schwerin has a touch of elegance. For example, the people in Schwerin often like to enjoy a piece of cake in one of the town's many cafés – but with a bit of cream, of course!

      Cultural capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Schwerin is seen as the cultural capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Although it is relatively small, Schwerin has an impressive theatre, museums and art scene. The Mecklenburg State Theatre and the State Museum Schwerin are particularly interesting.

      Lake Schwerin

Lake Schwerin is a unique water paradise for sailors and surfers. Sailing schools and surf stations, lots of jetties along the watercourse paths and guest berths attract lots of water-based tourists every year. Where there is a lot of water, there is also a lot of fish! Many resorts offer fishing enthusiasts the chance to practise their hobby when on holiday. A camping holiday on one of the beautiful campsites is a very pleasant and adventurous experience. A large network of water hiking trails offers you a view of the charming and varied countryside with river banks, meadows and forests that are as pretty as a picture. With a little luck, you will discover rare birds and animal species.
